Mother Teresa, with civil name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhio, joined the Loreto Sisters in Ireland at the age of 18. She pursued the desire to carry the life of Christ to the people. Teresa was sent as a missionary to Benga and started to visit the people in the slums of Calcutta. It was her pleasure to rejoice the poor people by visiting them.
When she entered the convent in India, she gave up her civil name and took the name of the patroness of world mission, Thérèse of Lisieux - who became her idol.
An apparition of Jesus made her decide to dedicate her life to the poor. So, with the Pope's permission, she left the convent and began a life in the slums with the poor as one of them.
Later, the Missionaries of Charity community was established, for whose work Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
